The Metabolic Equivalent (MET):

The Metabolic Equivalent (MET) is used to compare the energy consumption of different activities. It determines the metabolism of a human when resting in comparison to his body weight.

The scientific definition:

1 MET means a calorie consumption of 1 kcal per kilogram (=2.2lb) of body weight per hour. (Ainsworth et.al.,1993).

This makes it possible to calculate calorie consumption for different physical activities.

  • Sitting; 1MET
  • Raking a Lawn (1hr); 4MET
  • Walking; 5MET
  • Nordic Pole Walking; 7MET
  • Jogging (10km/hr); 10MET
